His Light

My new room is covered with dark paneling. Not my choice, but cozy. I have to turn sideways in order to avoid bumping the wooden fireplace mantle next to my bed. The fireplace doesn’t work and is covered with metal. Two thin windows stand on either side. From my side of the bed, I view tall poplars that hide the morning sun until it peeks over.

It reminds me of Psalm 19: 4b-6,

“In the heavens he has pitched a ten for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.”

I think my favorite part of the farm is the light. The sun bubbles over the trees in the morning. It might be my favorite time of the day, except for sunset.

As the sun finishes its circuit, its light shines straight across the trees and moves up like a stage curtain going the wrong way until it disappears and there is only a golden glow.

Pure joy.

Disney couldn’t compare. A 3-D movie pales.

God’s light.

It reminds me of another passage found in Psalm 139:7-12,

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? I f I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me, even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”

Even though I’m 700 miles from my home of 30 years. Even though I live in an old farmhouse less than half the size of my old house, even though I left great friends and I’m doing something I’ve never done, He is there.

His sun shines on North Carolina trees, and Tampa Bay beaches.

Wherever His Son shines there is brilliant light.  There is no night with Him. No darkness.

I know because it shines in my heart and warms me like the sunrise and sunset.

And when I see light on our fields and trees, I see His light.

If you’re experiencing darkness today, gaze at the Son. Look at the sun.

And smile.

Wait for pure joy.
